Recipe & How to Make Japanese Sushi at Home
Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish made of seasoned rice with fillings like fish, vegetables, or eggs, wrapped in nori (dried seaweed). Here’s a simple sushi recipe you can try at home.
Ingredients
1. Sushi Rice:
300 grams of Japanese rice (or any short-grain rice)
375 ml water
3 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
½ tsp salt
2. Sushi Fillings (choose as desired):
100 grams of fresh raw salmon/tuna (optional)
1 avocado (thinly sliced)
1 cucumber (cut into long strips)
2 eggs (made into a thin omelet and cut into strips)
4 sheets of nori (dried seaweed)
3. Condiments:
Soy sauce
Wasabi (Japanese spicy paste)
Pickled ginger (gari)
How to Make Sushi
1. Preparing Sushi Rice
1. Rinse the rice until the water runs clear, then drain.
2. Cook the rice with 375 ml of water in a rice cooker until done.
3. While waiting, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, then stir until dissolved.
4. Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and slowly mix in the vinegar mixture to avoid crushing the grains.
5. Let the rice cool to room temperature before using.
2. Preparing the Sushi Fillings
1. Raw salmon/tuna: Slice thinly (if using raw fish).
2. Egg omelet: Beat the eggs, add a little salt, make a thin omelet, then cut it into long strips.
3. Vegetables: Slice avocado and cucumber into long strips for easy rolling.
3. Rolling the Sushi
1. Place a nori sheet on a makisu (bamboo sushi mat) or plastic wrap if you don’t have one.
2. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then spread the sushi rice evenly on the nori, leaving 1 cm at the top edge for sealing.
3. Arrange the fillings (fish, egg, cucumber, avocado) in the center of the rice.
4. Carefully roll the sushi using the mat, pressing gently to keep it firm.
5. Once rolled, cut it into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife moistened with water to prevent sticking.
4. Serving the Sushi
Arrange the sushi on a plate and serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger (gari).
Enjoy using chopsticks or eat it by hand, just like in Japan!
Tips for Making Perfect Sushi
✅ Use Japanese rice or short-grain rice for the best sticky texture.
✅ Keep the knife sharp and wet it before cutting for clean slices.
✅ Don’t overfill the sushi roll to make rolling easier.
✅ If you don’t like raw fish, try using egg, teriyaki chicken, or crab sticks (surimi) instead.
Sushi is a healthy and delicious dish that’s perfect for a special treat at home. Would you like to give it a try?
